Some people have curly hair because of an uneven distribution of a protein called keratin along the hair follicle. In case of curly hair, the keratin gathers near the edge of the hair, with hair curling around it. Additionally, curls are also caused by asymmetrical hair follicles, while people with straight hair have symmetrical follicles.
