Why do we celebrate National Technology Day on May 11?

India celebrates National Technology Day on May 11 to mark completion of 'Operation Shakti' in 1998. The operation was a series of five nuclear bomb tests conducted at Indian Army's Pokhran test range in May 1998. The celebration of National Technology Day was started in 1999 by former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, under whose leadership the tests were conducted.
