Why does eating too many carrots turn people's skin orange?

Eating too many carrots can turn a person's skin orange due to the presence of the pigment beta-carotene. Beta-carotene gets converted to Vitamin A in the human body, however when high levels of the pigment are consumed they circulate in the bloodstream. If the levels are sustained, the skin may take an orange hue, leading to a condition called carotenemia.
