Why does India celebrate National Girl Child Day on January 24?

The Government of India in 2008 declared January 24 to be celebrated as the National Girl Child Day every year to raise the society's consciousness towards girls so they are valued and respected. According to the government, National Girl Child Day is meant to create awareness about the rights a girl owns and to give girls opportunities like everyone else.
