Why does King Cobra leave its nest before eggs hatch?

The king cobra is known for its unusual nesting behaviour. The female guards her eggs for 60 to 80 days without feeding before leaving the nest shortly before they hatch. Wildlife experts suggest extreme hunger may trigger her predatory instincts, putting hatchlings at risk. By leaving before hatching, she reduces the chance of preying on her own young.
