Why does OpenAI want US govt to own a 5% stake in the company?

OpenAI is considering giving the US government a 5% stake to strengthen ties with the Trump administration, address political scrutiny and ensure that Americans benefit from AI's economic gains. The proposed stake would be held in a government-run public wealth fund. OpenAI proposed that major AI companies, including Anthropic, Google and Meta, also contribute a 5% stake to the fund.
