Why has India's ATM count dropped by 9,000 in 2 years?

India's ATM count has fallen from 2,18,815 in March 2024 to 2,09,812 in July 2026, a drop of roughly 9,000. The decline comes amid the rapid rise of digital payments, which has reduced cash withdrawal volumes, making ATMs increasingly expensive to maintain. The value of ATM transactions has dropped by over 20% to ₹2.20 lakh crore during the same period.
