Why has US charged Adani for bribing officials in India?

US SEC indicted Gautam Adani on charges of deceiving US investors and lenders. It said Adani raised capital by concealing that his company's major solar project in India was being facilitated with an alleged $250-million bribe to Indian government officials between 2020 and 2024. Adani allegedly destroyed records, withheld evidence and made false statements to investigators to "obstruct justice".
