Why India has one time zone despite a two-hour sunrise gap
India stretches over 2,900 km east to west, creating a sunrise gap of over two hours between Arunachal Pradesh and Gujarat. During colonial rule, cities followed different local times, including Bombay, Calcutta and Madras Time. After independence, a unified Indian Standard Time was adopted to streamline railways, communication, administration and interstate commerce across the country.
