Why is Bab el-Mandeb Strait called the 'Gate of Tears'?

The Bab el-Mandeb strait is called the 'Gate of Tears' because its Arabic name literally translates to 'gate of lamentation', with 'bab' meaning 'gate' and 'mandab' meaning 'lamentation'. It reflects the dangers sailors historically faced while crossing the narrow, turbulent waterway. Strong currents, reefs and frequent shipwrecks caused many deaths.
