According to legend, Lord Krishna encouraged the people of Braj to worship Govardhan Hill and nature instead of Indra, the king of gods. Angered by this, Lord Indra retaliated by unleashing heavy rainfall, but Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill on his little finger to shelter villagers and their cattle. It is believed that performing the puja properly brings Lord Krishna's blessings.
