Why is January 9 observed as Pravasi Bharatiya Divas?

India observes Pravasi Bharatiya Divas on January 9 every year to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community in the development of the country. January 9 was chosen to mark the occasion as Mahatma Gandhi returned to India on this day in 1915 after spending nearly 21 years in South Africa.
