Rubbing can break tiny blood vessels resulting in bloodshot eyes. It also welcomes bacteria and germs around the eye, which can cause an infection. Rubbing the eyes can result in thinning of cornea (keratoconus) and cause distorted vision, and can damage cornea through abrasion if eyes are rubbed when there's a foreign body or object inside, as per experts.
