Railway tracks are not laid as a single continuous piece but are joined at regular intervals. This leaves small gaps between them which is an engineered safety measure, a News18 report said. Gaps exist because iron and steel expand in high temperatures and contract in cold weather. Without this space, high temperatures could cause the tracks to expand and bend.
