Why should taxpayers disclose gifts received in their ITR?

Tax-free gifts from parents, spouses and other specified relatives do not attract income tax, but taxpayers may still consider disclosing them in their ITR this year. A new "Receipts not in the nature of income" field allows reporting of such exempt receipts. Disclosure is advisable for large or unusual gifts, especially if they later fund major investments or property purchases.
