Why should window shades be up during take off and landing?

The window shades in an aircraft should be open during takeoff and landing to be better prepared for mishaps. It helps the crew to look out of the windows to assess which side of the aircraft is safest to disembark from within 90 seconds, if a mishap occurs. Additionally, it helps passengers acclimatise to the lighting, in case of emergency.
