Why some merchants charge an extra 2% on credit card payments?
A 2% credit card surcharge is justified by merchants as a way to recover the fee they pay for card payments, known as Merchant Discount Rate (MDR). MDR is shared among the issuing bank, card network and acquiring bank. Customers should check whether charges are labelled as fees, convenience charges or surcharges.
