Why was the 7.4-magnitude Colombia quake so destructive?

The 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia on Monday, killing at least 132 people, was particularly destructive because it hit near the remote, mountainous and forested terrain of San Jose del Palmar. The extent of the damage was also influenced by the earthquake's depth, distance from epicentre, local geology, and the quality of buildings. The quake also injured over 500 people.
