Why were 58 engineering colleges closed across India?

The AICTE shut down 58 engineering colleges across India during 2025-26 due to reasons like low student intake, inability to maintain required faculty, non-compliance with infrastructure, operational norms, etc. Three of them were government-aided and the rest were privately financed. "Over 950 courses...in technical and engineering colleges...were also closed," an AICTE official said.
