World Consumer Rights Day was inspired by former US President John F Kennedy, who formally addressed the issue of consumer rights in a message to the US Congress on March 15, 1962. The day was first observed on March 15 in 1983 and has since been celebrated yearly to raise global awareness the rights and needs of consumers.
