Barbados declared singer Rihanna as its National Hero during its republican celebrations. "May you continue to shine like a diamond and bring honour to your nation," said PM Mia Mottley at the occasion. Nearly 400 years after the country became a British colony, Barbados officially removed Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state to become the world's newest republic.
