Zubeida Begum’s life inspires National Award-winning film Zubeidaa

Zubeida Begum was one of the early faces of Indian cinema. When she married outside her faith and into a royal family, she faced sharp criticism and isolation. However, her story remained hidden in the shadows until 2001, when it inspired a National Award-winning film, Zubeidaa, directed by Shyam Benegal and written by her own son, Khalid Mohamed.
