Zwan-Wolf effect detected in Mars' atmosphere for 1st time

NASA's MAVEN spacecraft has detected the Zwan-Wolf effect in the Martian ionosphere for the first time, a study published in Nature Communications said. The effect was observed after a powerful solar storm in December 2023. First discovered in 1976, the phenomenon had earlier been seen only in planetary magnetospheres. It squeezes charged particles along magnetic flux tubes.
