According to Dr Kartik at THIP Media, stimulant laxatives trigger accelerated bowel movements via colon muscle activation but prolonged use disrupts the gut microbiome, causes electrolyte imbalance (notably hypokalaemia) and may lead to melanosis coli and colonic muscle atrophy. These pathophysiological changes raise long-term risk beyond simple relief.
