Seismometers around the world are recording decreased seismic noise as a result of lockdowns imposed by many governments to contain the spread of COVID-19. Seismic noise refers to the vibration in Earth's upper crust, generated by cars, trains, buses and other human activities. The reduced noise allows seismologists to detect smaller earthquakes that they otherwise wouldn't be able to notice.
