Japan's childbirths fall to record low for 9th straight year

The number of babies born in Japan fell by 5% to a record low of 7,20,988 in 2024, marking the ninth consecutive year of decline. A record number of 1.62 million deaths meant that more than two people died for every new baby born, as per the government data. The decline in birth rate comes amid fewer marriages in Japan.
