A study from Gujarat's Matanomadh and Umarsar mines by scientists at BHU and IIT Dhanbad revealed microscopic pyrite shaped like sunflowers. This unique structure acts as a chemical catalyst that reacts rapidly with oxygen, accelerating self-heating in coal. It poses a massive threat of sudden, uncontrollable underground fires for miners and acid rain.
