A Muslim teacher was thrashed by locals after refusing to sing Vande Mataram following a flag-hoisting ceremony on Republic Day on January 26 in Bihar. He said, "Vande Mataram is against our belief. Nowhere in the Constitution is it written that saying Vande Mataram is necessary." Meanwhile, Bihar Education Minister KN Prasad Verma said, “National song's insult is not forgivable."
