NASA flies large unmanned aircraft in public airspace

NASA's remotely piloted Ikhana aircraft successfully flew its first mission in the US airspace without a safety chase aircraft on Tuesday. The flight took off from Edwards Air Force Base in California and reached an altitude of about 20,000 feet, where commercial airliners fly. The technology could help monitor and fight forest fires, and provide emergency search and rescue operations.
