NASA used data from its SDO and developed a model that successfully predicted seven of Sun's biggest flares from the last solar cycle, out of a set of nine. Scientists focused on X-class flares, most powerful kind of solar flares which unleash huge amounts of energy. Flares erupt from hot spots of magnetic activity on solar surface, called active regions.
