UK may scrap jail terms of six months or less

The UK government is considering scrapping jail terms of six months or less in England and Wales in a bid to ease pressure on prisons, Justice Minister Rory Stewart said. Around 30,000 criminals including burglars and most shoplifters could be spared jail every year under the proposed move, according to reports. Exceptions would be made for violent or sex offenders.
