A UN report on Monday warned the banking and financial system in Afghanistan faces a collapse and that its consequent negative social impact "would be colossal". It called for urgent action to prop up Afghanistan's banks. The collapse of Afghanistan's Western-backed government in August and the withdrawal of most foreign development aid has sent the economy into freefall.
