World short of 6 million nurses amid COVID-19 pandemic, says WHO

There is a global shortfall of nearly six million nurses amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the WHO has said, referring to them as the "backbone of any health system". To avert this, countries need to increase the number of nurse graduates by around 8% per year, it added. Over 80% of nurses practice in countries where half of world's population lives.
