Lakshadweep ends 47-year-old alcohol ban to boost tourism

The government has repealed the 47-year-old Lakshadweep Prohibition Regulation, 1979, allowing alcohol sales through licensed outlets to boost tourism. It has introduced a regulated licensing system governing the manufacture, possession, import, export, sale and consumption of liquor. It also allows government-owned corporations to obtain licences for importing and retailing alcoholic beverages.
