The benchmark BSE index Sensex plunged 540 points to close at 40,145.50 on Monday while the Nifty shed 162 points to settle at 11,767.75. Metals and auto indices shed the most during the trade amid a sell-off and subdued global cues. Reliance Industries ended 3.7% lower, registering its biggest single-day drop in three months.
