$5.7 trillion iron ore system much younger than thought

A new geological study shows the $5.7 trillion Hamersley iron ore system in Western Australia formed much later than believed. Direct dating of hematite places its formation between 1.4 and 1.1 billion years ago. The basin holds about 55 billion tonnes of ore and was shaped by tectonic forces, not early atmospheric oxygen.
