‘Champagne of Teas’ loses ground in global market
Darjeeling tea, once known as the “Champagne of Teas,” is facing a steep decline in the global market, with exports nearly halving over the past decade. Rising production costs, climate challenges and competition from cheaper teas are putting pressure on the industry. The crisis threatens the livelihoods of thousands of plantation workers while putting Darjeeling’s rich tea heritage at risk.
