The International Astronomical Union announced that various geological features on planet Mars have been given Indian names. The new Martian sites are named after different landmarks in Kerala - its largest river, the Periyar, its largest fort, Bekal, and the Varkala beach. The sites on Mars have also been named after two towns linked to ISRO: Thumba and Valiamala.
