Commissioned by the Maharaja of Baroda, Gaekwad Khande Rao, the Pearl Carpet was intended as a gift for the tomb of the Prophet Muhammad in Madina. It has been crafted with more than 1.5 million Basra Pearls that weigh 30,000 carats. The carpet, woven on silk and deer hide, was auctioned by Sotheby's in 2009 for $5.5 million.
