Researchers have discovered that sea urchins possess a brain-like nervous system spread throughout their bodies rather than concentrated in one area. Their genes are similar to those found in human and vertebrate brains. Light-sensitive cells across this network allow them to detect and respond to light, suggesting complex processing can occur without a single brain centre.
