The US CDC has recommended lowering the age for pneumococcal vaccination from 65 to 50 years to give more adults the opportunity to protect themselves from pneumococcal disease at an age when the risk of infection substantially increases. Pneumococcal bacteria cause serious illnesses like pneumonia, meningitis, and infections. The vaccines from Merck and Pfizer are currently available in the US.
