Scientists have solved the century-old mystery of Antarctica's Blood Falls, where red water flows from Taylor Glacier. The water isn't blood but iron-rich, salty brine trapped beneath the glacier which oxidises and turns reddish-brown when exposed to oxygen. Its high salt content lowers the freezing point, allowing the brine to remain liquid despite the glacier being one of the coldest.
