The body of a 12-year-old girl was found stuffed in a sack in a pond in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, following which her family alleged that she was raped and murdered. A mob later lynched a man after accusing him of carrying out the crime. The locals also staged a protest demanding justice and attacked police personnel.
