The Centre informed Parliament that 13,212 freedom fighters are still alive and getting pension under Swatantrata Sainik Samman Yojana (SSSY). Additionally, 9,778 freedom fighter widows are also receiving pension. The SSSY provides pensions to those who took part in around 40 events of India’s freedom struggle between 1857 and 1947. Telangana has the highest number of pensioners at 3,017.
