16-million-year-old dirt ant species discovered

New Jersey Institute of Technology scientists have found an ancient insect enveloped in 16-million-year-old amber in Dominican Republic. They have said that it is the first-ever fossil of a dirt ant from the Caribbean. The long-extinct species, named Basiceros enana, measures just over 5 millimetres in length. The researchers published their findings in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
