BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide detailed on the podcast how 55 km of tunnels for Metro Line 3 were bored by 17 tunnel boring machines, since Mumbai's hard basalt rock allows just 8-10 metres of drilling a day. Tunnels run 22 metres deep on average. Work was split into 7 packages with a two-package cap per contractor.
