Germany-based scientists have traced the family tree of an extinct South American mammal which biologist Charles Darwin called the "strangest animal ever" after discovering its first fossils in 1834. New access to ancient DNA revealed that the 'Macrauchenia patachonica' species which died out around the end of the last ice age is related to the group including rhinos and horses.
