The Soviet Union had sent the first ever animal- Laika (dog)- to orbit the Earth on November 3, 1957. Sent to space in 'Sputnik-2' spacecraft, Laika (3) died on the mission. While initial reports claimed she died of running out of oxygen on day six, Russia revealed in 2002 that she died from elevated body temperature, hours after Sputnik's launch.
