Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to travel into space in June 1963. The cosmonaut successfully completed 48 Earth orbits in 71 hours aboard Vostok 6 module and never went on another mission. Born on March 6, 1937, Tereshkova achieved the feat when she was aged 26 and remains the only woman to travel solo in space.
