2,000-year-old skulls reveal ancient Vietnamese blackened their teeth

A study of 2,000-year-old skulls from Dong Xa, an archaeological site in the Red River delta of northern Vietnam, found iron-rich compounds on enamel, suggesting intentional tooth blackening. Lead author Yue Zhang said he believes people used iron salts and plant tannins to achieve the look. The practice, once a beauty symbol, continues in parts of Southeast Asia even today.
